Why does God allow suffering?

The Bible does not give a tidy formula, but it is clear on three things: suffering entered the world through sin and brokenness, not God’s original design; God is present with us in it rather than distant from it; and through Jesus’ own suffering and resurrection, God has promised to end it.

Scripture is honest about pain - whole books (Job, Lamentations, many Psalms) are people wrestling with God over it. God does not ask anyone to pretend.

The Christian answer is ultimately a person, not an explanation: Jesus entered our suffering, died, and rose, and Revelation 21:4 promises a day when God "will wipe every tear from their eyes." In the meantime, the church exists so that nobody suffers alone.
